How would you rate European School The Hague (ESH)?
I have 2 children at the Secondary School. This school is an absolute disaster, in particular the administration. It is too late for my children to change school, but I would not recommend this school at all.
At the secondary school, the teaching quality is variable, many teachers are not motivated . The management is incompetent, the timetable is never ready at the beginning of the year , it is a total chaos. In general, there is no structure in the school, pupils are left to themselves, on their cell phone or gaming on their laptop. Definitely not recommended.
I had my two children at ESH for 5 years. I left this school in desperation. And I had never been so happy about a decision. The management is full of incompetent and arrogant people, who have very little understand of children needs and how to run an international school. Teachers do not stay long in this school, sometimes not even a year. Teachers are demotivated and there is a big absenteeism. Therefore lots of lesson are completely skipped. Your children may find themselves hanging around for hours doing nothing during school time, missing lessons and learning opportunities. Bullying is not taking seriously and the victims and their family do not get the needed support. The school does not even care about the safety of some parts of the building such as playgrounds. If you can and if you care about your child education, their well being and future, stay away from this school.
Honestly, as an ex student, I did not like this school at all. It was a horrible experience for me. I have always felt excluded somehow. I had no friends.I have also been discriminated several times. I reported it continuously to my mentor and other confidential supporters but nothing changed. I took further steps by reaching the management and discussed everything with them, but unfortunately there was no support at all and I was the person to blame after all, despite seeing my devastated state ! I tried to handle this alone by joining a diversity and inclusion club ( supported by a teacher and some students only). I thought that it will have an end since we worked hard in this club, trying to raise awareness on discrimination. We created an anti-discrimination protocol that we were aiming to publish in the school website. However, by the time we finalised it, the management did not approve it for being published and sent to the whole community for some undetermined reason. I was shocked and I had no words... Besides, some teachers don't actually teach you stuff then they expect you to do well on the exams. There is a big lack of education. I can't remember how many times I had an exam with questions we have never covered. If you are not fully European like me, I do not recommend at all joining this school. It is not multicultural ! and you will just feel excluded. I honestly have no more words to express how bad my experience was in this school ! ... and I just gave one star for only two teachers that I appreciated there !
My son is at the European school and we are getting him out. The school is very disorganised, the periods are too short to learn properly, teachers as an alternative give a ton of hands-out to kids which makes their writing skills drop. Good luck understanding what they are actually learning. Teachers absenteism very high. Also big turn over during the year which is confusing. If science teacher is absent, Math or Geography teacher will substitute ! Total lack of training with IT interfaces. You get a computer with free access to internet but no training no information about the dangers of internet. Freestyle, sort it out yourself. Teachers use several interfaces (for homework and tests) at their convenience without consensus. No actual books ! Scoring system is messy (if you have As and Bs everywhere but 2 Es in language and music you don't pass) Communication with the school is not relaxed. We gave up. The list is very long.
We had 2 kids at ESH for 2 years and neither my kids nor ourselves enjoyed it. The class was unruly, mis-behaved, teachers had no control over classes, one of my children spent her day outside as the teacher was unable to create a learning environment. Management involvement is zero. Go elsewhere when hitting The Hague and have other options.
I was continuously bullied, neglected, discriminated against and socially outcast by both teachers and students. My mentor knew about my unfortunate social circumstances and continued to blame me for it. Eventually after three years the secondary supervisor advised me that it would be best if I switched to another school. The best decision I’ve ever made was leaving there.

Beware that it is not a real European School. In fact it is more like a Dutch School which managed to get some financing by the Dutch state and the international organizations by trying to appear as European: what I mean: Teachers are mostly with Dutch passport and selected by the School management so they are not assigned according to European criteria. School holidays are exactly like Dutch school holidays, not even a week of difference, so prepare yourself to pay expensive tickets when you then fly home in Europe and face long queues if you travel by car. If your child is sick they ask you several proofs, worst than your employer! Heard also stories of children who were not allowed to go to the toilet during lesson.
